What To Do When Your Lawn Mower Won’t Start

It’s a sinking feeling: You’re ready to cut the grass, you go to start your machine, and nothing happens. There are many different reasons why your machine won’t start, and there are a few things you can do to troubleshoot your mower. Start by repeating the startup process step by step because it’s possible you missed one in your initial attempt. If that doesn’t work, you’ll need to troubleshoot. This will look differently depending on whether you’re using a walk-behind or a riding lawn mower. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Consult the operator’s manual Your operator’s manual will contain the steps you need to follow to start your mower again. If you need another copy, visit CubCadet.com, search your model number, and download the appropriate manual. For riding mowers, you may need to re-connect the spark plug wire, make sure the battery is still functional, re-engage the control handle, or activate the parking brake/choke.

Check the fuel One of the most common culprits preventing walk-behind mowers from starting is old fuel. If your fuel is more than 30 days old, and you didn’t modify it with stabilizer, then your engine won’t start because the fuel won’t combust. You will first need to drain the old fuel from your mower, properly dispose of it, and then replace it with new fuel. Old fuel can cause problems for your engine by leaving deposits that gum up or block your engine, fuel lines, and carburetor. Once key parts begin gumming up, you’ll need to get your machine serviced by a professional. Additives like StaBil can help prevent your fuel from gumming up your machine. It’s also recommended that you change out old fuel at the end of the season.

Check your spark plugs and air filter Dirt and debris naturally will get sucked into your machine when you mow. Spark plugs can accumulate dirt and deposits after prolonged use. This generally takes a few years, but it won’t function properly once it accumulates too much deposits. Regularly cleaning the plug can help prolong its use, but it will need to be replaced once it becomes corroded beyond repair. Your air filter helps mitigate the impact of dirt and debris on your mower. Once it becomes dirty, however, debris could to work its way into the engine and prevent it from starting. Regularly clean or replace dirty air filters.
